Surviving Cancer was a Race I Had to WinBy Bob Jane
It was 1994 when I was diagnosed with 'prostate cancer' with a PSA level of 8-9, and given a maximum of 2 years to live. Normal PSA level is 1-3 and anything above this level is generally considered to be a 'cancer risk'. In my particular situation, it was considered to be very dangerous and I was strongly advised by the oncologist that I have the prostate removed. I was 59 years of age at the time and not all keen on having my prostate removed. I believed there had to be another way, that radical surgery was not necessarily the way to heal the body. After reading up on prostate cancer and much deliberation, I decided against the operation and proceeded to embark on a new way of life. Shortly after my decision, I was interviewed by The Sunday Sun, and to my astonishment, I received a flood of letters and visits from people all over the country offering to help and sending me prayer. I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support that was given to me. This touched me so deeply that words fail to describe the profound impact that this made to my outlook in life.
Amongst the many people who offered their help and support, was a friend who drew my attention to the biblical text of Genesis (Old Testament). In this text we find the secrets to "God's pharmacy." (See 11,12 and 29 "And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw it was good"). I realized at this point that God had provided us with the perfect medicine by giving us plentiful and wholesome supply of food found in grains, fruits and vegetables that were unadulterated, natural and beneficial to our state of health. Upon reading this text, it struck me that I should try and restore my health by replenishing the body with the foods that had been intended for us to eat. Amazed by this self discovery, I delved into gathering information on nutritional therapy. My lifestyle changed; I began to eat natural and organic foods, increased my vitamin C intake and exercised daily by going to the gym and walking 4 miles per day. This was a dramatic lifestyle change from what I had been used to in the preceding years leading to my diagnosis; the over indulgence of food and wine combined with the sedentary lifestyle that went along with being a business entrepreneur did not prove to be in my best interests.
For many years my level of fitness and vitality had enabled me to endure many serious and painful accidents throughout my career as a successful motor race driver, but when diagnosed with cancer, I suddenly found myself faced with the biggest challenge of all- to live and live a 'quality life'. Despite previous injuries and existing spinal problem, I have managed to stay clear of cancer for 12 years due to nutritional health and belief in God. The revelation in Genesis (grass, herbs, fruits and seeds) justified my belief in God's food as not just the 'best food', but the only food that can heal.
'Healing' to me is a combination of sound nutritional therapy and faith in God. This faith needs to be felt at a deep spiritual level and reflected in one's daily life and expressed in the form of profound gratitude.
As a representation of my faith, a chapel now stands at the Calder Raceway as a reminder to all of our Divine connection. Racing car drivers and others are free to use this chapel to pray for protection and the safety of all drivers. It is the only race track that I know of that has a chapel.
